When does one actually become a grown-up? Being a mother now, I sometimes wonder whether my excitement over a "Smarties" cake or a special birthday meal, or the trampoline in my daughter's playground, is not just as great as my daughter's. And as for the treehouse?
Kore and I set off to see the treehouse full of anticipation, but once we arrive I am suddenly hit by motherly concerns about how to get my daughter up there.
High up in the treetops, like a spaceship, floats this almost unreal, unbelievably inviting treehouse. While to me it appears totally out of reach, Kore cannot get up there fast enough. She sets off up the seemingly interminable ladder so quickly and resolutely that I have no choice but to go straight up after her. I do not have enough time to consider the safety aspects.
But we both reach the top safely! We are very, very high up, it seems to me. Sheep are grazing on the grass far below us. We look out the windows and can really see in all directions.
On the small sundeck we are surrounded solely by the foliage and fascinating branches that twist and turn in all directions. From here we can lift our luggage with a pulley.
We then get ready for the night in the cosy 'cabin'. Kore bounces on the bed as if we were down on the ground below and not 9 metres up a tree. Eventually, she falls asleep to the gentle rustling of leaves and swaying of the trees. I certainly do not want to go to sleep yet, so I spend the rest of the evening relaxing out on the terrace and then, too, finally go to bed.
The next day we awake to see the morning sunlight flooding through the leaves. Let the day begin�.
From the top the ladder looks even steeper than from below. This time I make sure that Kore is securely harnessed for a less worrying descent.
Looking back, I recall how naturally Kore moved around in a house suspended high above the ground between two trees. I find it all a totally fascinating experience - a sign, perhaps, that I am not completely grown up. This adventure certainly brought out the child in me again.
