In 2014 a notable event for Oldenburg Castle Garden took place. This beautiful park had been created 200 years earlier and has since become a sanctuary for botanists and those looking for a place to relax in the city centre. The anniversary was celebrated with various events and  xhibitions. The organisers had the idea of building one or more treehouses, thus enabling an appreciation of the park and the particularly beautiful trees for a limited time. Our concept included five identical cubes which were to be installed in prime locations in the park. Four of these 2.5 by 2.5 metre large compartments were to hover among groups of trees. One of the cubes was to be situated in the castle pond and reached via a walkway at the bank of the pond. Following an efficient installation, the treehouses were inaugurated on 25 April 2014 at an anniversary event in the presence of Stephan Weil, the Prime Minister of Lower Saxony, and made available to the public. Visitors could now have a picnic among the leaves and view the park from a different perspective.

The treehouses added a nice touch: from there, visitors could glance over a high wall at the part of the park that was not accessible to the public and thus witness at close proximity the beautiful blossoms of the tulip trees. The colour concept of the capsules, which are fitted with acrylic glass, was intended to underline the unique character of each setting. Thus, the white treehouse in the tulip trees corresponds to the colour of the blossoms, while the dark blue treehouse by the kitchen garden wall reflects the enchanted look of the place. A group of primeval redwood trees were assigned a black cube, whereas a striking light-blue treehouse at the park entrance near a large meadowhovers between two stately tree and welcomes visitors. The treehouse above the surface of the castle pond acquired the colour of magenta, in conformity with the blossoms of the water lilies. The treehouses, which are equipped with benches and a table, invite one to linger for a short or long period of time. During their existence of four and a half months, the spatial installations were very popular places for people of all ages. Each treehouse was equipped with guestbooks which rapidly filled with entries. Some – young visitors in most cases furnished these places with small inscriptions and engravings on the benches and tables. This kind of appropriation was not part of the concept and at first was met with little enthusiasm by the park administration. After a while, however, one learnt to appreciate this form of lively communication and individual
expression.
