Treehouse Apulia

The client, who lives and works in Milan, owns a property close to the town of Avetrana in the Italian province of Apulia, where he and his family spend their holidays. The property’s immediate vicinity to the sea is a highly valued quality, particularly during the hot summer months. Now the client wanted a treehouse, to create additional sleeping space and offer the family a place for playing and relaxing. At the first site visit, in the winter before assembly, the property revealed itself to be extensive with sandy soil and countless pines. Because there were many places in which the treehouse could be sited, a thorough inspection of the property was required.

The place finally chosen was the property’s highest point with two gnarled pines close to the swimming pool. After a few sketches, it was agreed that the treehouse would have a two-level terrace with a right-angled design. The overlapping treehouse cabin would be on the upper level. The main loads of the construction would be transferred to the two pines by means of hangers. Since one of the two trees was of somewhat weaker structure and would have been unable to bear the projected loads, the treehouse was additionally supported by two conically-shaped beams.

Inside, there is a spacious reclining area, with a bench opposite. Both areas are upholstered and covered with wool felt. The generous glazing and the skylight offer a panoramic view of the gently rolling South Italian landscape and the tree-tops.
